Lately, we’ve been showcasing some of our most advanced horses — but today, we’re turning the spotlight to the future. Meet Samarth WL, one of our most promising young prospects, already showing the class and charisma we seek in a top-level dressage horse.

Bred from Quo Vadis SS (a 4⭐ APSL-recommended stallion and sire of the Olympic stallion Equador MVL) and out of Jocosa, Samarth carries the kind of genetics that speak for themselves.

Standing nearly 5’5 at the withers — and still growing — he’s built for performance, with an effortless push off the ground and an unbreakable cadence that hints at serious dressage talent. We’re incredibly excited to begin his work under saddle and to see just how far his natural ability and heritage will take him. Curious about him?

We can’t keep them all…

This week, we said goodbye to two exceptional mares as they left our Tennessee farm to join an exciting new project in Canada.

Sired by our exceptional stallion Mistral SS and out of Jaca (by Riopele), Rajada WL is a half-sister to Salacia WL, whom we proudly introduced just two weeks ago. With such a powerful genetic cocktail, Rajada WL is poised to make a remarkable impact on her new owner’s breeding program.

Querida WL, sired by Quo-Vadis out of Lisboa MAC, brings outstanding sport genetics as a half-sister to Olympic dressage stallion Equador MVL.
We wish their new owners the very best and look forward to following their next chapter!

🐴 “No hoof, no horse” – an old truth that still stands strong.

Did you know that in Portugal we have a saying: “Sem cascos não há cavalo”, which literally means “Without hooves, there is no horse”? Hoof health is absolutely essential, and at Wasatch Lusitanos, we treat it with the same importance as nutrition, joint care, and training.

Our horses’ feet are checked regularly, and we’ve carefully selected a skilled farrier team to ensure top-notch care. From early on, our young horses are introduced to the farrier process so they’re confident and calm when the time comes.

We’re also proud to have a versatile team on hand, ready to jump in when hoof emergencies arise.

As summer comes to a close, we’re wrapping up the final pregnancy confirmations — and looking ahead to 2026 with 17 foals expected from some of our top mares.

One of this year’s highlights was the colt by Quimera and Larápio MAC. Even at just a few weeks old, he showed impressive presence, a naturally curious attitude, and excellent conformation — long, straight legs, strong angles, and gaits to match a promising sport horse.

We’re looking forward to watching him develop — and just as excited to see what Quimera produces next year.

🎉 Celebrating 5 Years of Nero 🎉

Nero is a very special horse! Bred in Portugal by @lusitanos.carvalhomatos , Nero was already an impressive and talented young horse when he first caught our eye in 2020—elegant, photogenic, and with a natural flair that stood out right away. (Just look at that second photo—how high off the ground is he?! 😍)

He arrived at Wasatch in 2021 during a complicated time, right in the middle of the pandemic. But from the moment @zemariafialho met him, the two became true working companions. Under José Maria’s guidance, Nero began to steadily evolve and we are now seeing the results.

From winning his class in Model and Movements at the @worldequestriancenter @uslusitano Rising Stars competition in Ocala—presented in the traditional Portuguese style by @tomas_da_isabel —to his more recent accomplishments in dressage, Nero continues to grow into the talented athlete we always believed he could be.

His latest highlight? 🏆 1st place in 4th Level Test 3 at the 2025 Tennessean Express Dressage competition! He’s now on the brink of mastering Prix St. Georges, and we couldn’t be prouder of the partnership he’s building with José Maria.

Here’s to the journey so far—and everything still to come. ✨

🌟 Salacia – The Best of Both Worlds 🌟

Did you know that traditionally, there haven’t been many ridden mares in the Lusitano breed? Not because they lack quality as riding partners—but because the Lusitano is a rare breed and there simply weren’t many mares available.

That’s changing! Despite the breed’s rising popularity, with advances in veterinary and reproductive science, it’s now possible for the most outstanding mares to both contribute to the future of the breed and rise to the top of sport.

We have high hopes for our Salacia WL (by Mistral SS, out of Madragoa SS, by Rioepele), affectionately known as Benedita. At just 3 years old, she already shows:

✔️ Balanced, elastic gaits
✔️ Unbreakable rhythm and impulsion
✔️ A serious work ethic

She’s currently in training with our rider @zemariafialho and we’re excited to see what they’ll bring to the dressage arena in the upcoming years.

Tomás & Guapo delivered an impressive demonstration of Working Equitation, a discipline gaining international popularity and perfectly suited to the natural characteristics of the Lusitano breed.

The very first foal by Principe, and what a statement he makes! As we gear up for show season with our more advanced horses and say goodbye to some heading off to wonderful new homes, we’re also dreaming big for the next generation growing up in our fields.

One of them is the unforgettable Tornado (Opus MAC × Iris SS, by El Viti SS) — a whirlwind of charisma and class. With powerful gaits, natural impulsion, and that striking white face that runs in the family, Tornado has already made his mark by winning his class at the @uslusitano Model & Movement competition at Ocala’s @worldequestriancenter (presented by @daco7961 ).

He’s got another year to enjoy growing up before beginning his under-saddle training, but he’s already proving himself as an award-winning Lusitano with a big future ahead. ✨

Quadra’s Special Visit 🐴

Earlier this year, our lovely bay mare Quadra (Adido Interagro × Laica, by Violino SS) found her forever home — but she stayed with us a little longer to begin her training journey under the saddle of @tomas_da_isabel . This week, she received a heartwarming visit from her new owner, Callie Moss, who visited us to check on Quadra’s proggress before taking her home!

Quadra is one of those rare, steady-minded mares with a calm, focused attitude and beautifully rhythmic, comfortable gaits. Whether it’s for dressage work or relaxing hacks, she’s going to be a fantastic partner. She has in the meantime departed to her new home. We’re so happy to see such a promising match between horse and rider, and can’t wait to hear about their adventures together!

It’s that exciting time of year—not only are we welcoming the new foals, but we’re also planning the perfect pairings for next year’s foaling season!

This week, our powerhouse mare Noiva returned from the reproduction clinic and rejoined her friends and family in our lush, green pastures. Imported from Portugal in 2019, Noiva comes from a lineage of excellence: she’s by the multi-awarded Riopele SC and out of Altiva SS, sired by the exceptional Violino SS. Both her sire and maternal grandsire are celebrated for passing down exceptional gaits, and Noiva is truly living up to that legacy.

We’re thrilled to have her back—strong, graceful, and ready for what’s next. Wouldn’t you agree she truly honors her lineage?

“Oceano” means Ocean in Portuguese, and he truly reflects all the finest qualities of the Lusitano breed: noble character, willing temperament, and natural talent.

Meet Poison CV (Altivo SQT x Calvina), our standout sire for this year’s foal crop at Wasatch Lusitanos. Bred by @lusitanos.carvalhomatos —from none other than our own @nvicente_matos —Poison is a truly remarkable Lusitano stallion that is proving himself as a sire, with very promising foals on the ground on both sides of the Atlantic.

This golden medalist stole the show at the 2023 @apsl_official Lusitano International Festival, where he was named best in his class and Overall Grand Winner for horses under saddle, which made him cover of “Equitação”, Portugal’s main equestrian magazine. Since then, he’s earned APSL Merit Stallion status for his outstanding model and movements, and competed successfully at the @uslusitano Conference at Ocala’s @worldequestriancenter with his new owner @azores_stables .

✨ Fun fact: Did you know our beloved grey, Mansur CV (featured in our last post), is a brother to Poison and also descends from Calvina? And that Paladin carries Altivo SQT in his pedigree—twice? Work ethic, balance, and functionality clearly run deep in this family.

Jocosa – Our Golden Matriarch 💛

Jocosa was one of the very first horses we imported from Portugal back in 2018, and she has truly become a factory of golden foals! Out of the six foals she’s produced for us so far, four have been stunning buckskins — and impressively, all from different sires.

Among her remarkable offspring are Ostra WL (whose own filly was just born last week!), the very promising Real WL, Samarth WL, and our already graded stallion Paladin WL.

Jocosa is a beautifully typical Lusitano broodmare — full of quality, with a fantastic temperament and exceptional balance, traits she consistently passes on to her progeny.

As spring blooms around us, our herd is blossoming too, with plenty of new arrivals to celebrate this season of growth and new beginnings.

It’s been an exciting week at Wasatch Lusitanos! We’ve welcomed three promissing new arrivals – two boys and one girl. We keep a close watch on our mares, especially when they’re close to term, so we were lucky to capture all of their first moments on camera.

The first to arrive was a lovely buckskin filly by the bay beauty Ofensor MAC on OstraSS (by Adido Interagro). Our newest filly decided to make her grand entrance at dawn, and we were able to catch it all on film. By the time we arrived early in the morning to meet her, she was already fast asleep and content with a full belly! 🐴💤

“Our Goodbyes are Your New Beginnings”

“As breeders, it’s always a bittersweet mix of pride and sadness when we see our horses leave for their new homes. We can’t keep them all - after all, our work and our passion is to breed great Lusitanos for us but mostly for you - but they’ve been a part of our everyday life at Wasatch, and we’ve cared for them from the moment they were in their dam’s womb all the way to becoming strong, grown horses.

Earlier this year, our golden gem Polaris WL (Impar SS x Iris SS), left for a new home and is now grazing in Eugene ORL pastures. Our young bay beauty Sarek WL (Adido Int x Morena), will also be heading out eventually, but he’s staying a little longer at Wasatch to finish growing into his bones and to start training under the saddle of @tomas_da_isabel .

We wish their new owners M-R Lusitanos the best of luck and look forward to following their progress! If you’re interested in learning more about some of the newly available Lusitanos, don’t hesitate to reach out!”
