Fall 2025 marks five incredible years since this remarkable horse arrived to Wasatch from the green pastures of Coudelaria Manuel Assunção Coimbra in Golegã, Portugal’s capital of the horse.

Opus has flourished under the saddle of @zemariafialho , proving to be a quick, willing learner now confidently working through high-school exercises. His athleticism, heart, and generosity shine with every ride.

But his legacy extends beyond the arena—Opus is an active sire whose charming foals are already turning heads both here at Wasatch and across Canada.

We are incredibly proud of this exceptional stallion and excited to watch his offspring follow in his hoof-steps. Here’s to Opus MAC and many more years of excellence!

The fall is upon us, and with it comes one of the most important steps in a breeder’s cycle — weaning the new crop of foals.

We take great care to offer our broodmares & foals in the very best throughout the year, so we also wait until our foals are at least six months old before weaning. It’s also when we finally give them their names.

Naming is special to us. Each foal’s personality and our hopes for their future play a part, but as Lusitano breeders, we also follow tradition. This year, all Lusitano foals’ names must begin with the letter V.

✨ V for Victory, perhaps — since every healthy, happy foal weaned marks a milestone and a small triumph in the beautiful rhythm of breeding.

🇵🇹 Yesterday marked the start of another Nat

🇵🇹 Yesterday marked the start of another National Horse Fair (Feira Nacional do Cavalo - @feiradagolega ) in Golegã — Portugal’s true capital of the horse!

This century-old fair brings together the finest horse breeders from across Portugal (and even beyond) for what has become the largest and most prestigious celebration of the Lusitano breed.

For an entire week, Golegã transforms into a vibrant stage for competitions, exhibitions, art shows, conferences and parades — all honouring the Lusitano in its full splendour. Breeders, riders (professional and amateur alike), and enthusiasts fill the cobbled streets and the iconic Largo do Arneiro with tradition, elegance, and passion.

The highlight for many? The Model and Movements competitions on the Thursday before the final weekend — a true showcase of beauty, grace, and equestrian excellence.

🔥 Sarek WL (Adido Int x Morena SS) is an absolute bomb of a horse — and we mean that in the best way.

With his striking looks, deep dark bay coat, and powerful, off-the-ground movement, he’s pure elegance in motion. He doesn’t just move — he flies. And when he’s not turning heads in the arena, he’s melting hearts on the ground with his sweet, willing nature.

Currently in training with our rider @tomas_da_isabel , who shares:
🗣️ “I’ve been working with Sareck for the past six months. From the first sessions on the lunge, he was cooperative and focused — everything felt easy. Now that he’s built up his muscles and is ready to start his work under saddle, we’re looking forward to seeing him develop into a great saddle horse.”

We know this one is going to make someone very lucky. 🍀

Revision days are special occasions for every breeder.
They are the culmination of years of work — condensed into a single, meaningful day.

Breeding a Lusitano is a journey that begins with vision and faith. It requires deep expertise to select the right pair, followed by tireless dedication in raising mares, nurturing foals in the fields, and preparing young horses through thoughtful training.

After 4–5 years of intense labor, everything leads to this moment: the APSL revision — the official evaluation that puts a final stamp of approval on a breeder’s efforts to develop a good type.

Meet the newest stallion born from the Wasatch Lusitanos program — Ribatejo WL 🐎

Ribatejo WL (Adido Int x Noiva SS) was one of the highest-scoring horses at this year’s revision, and we couldn’t be prouder! This accomplishment means so much to us, as he was fully bred at our stud and represents the collective efforts of our entire team.

He truly embodies everything we love about the Lusitano: typicity, balance, smooth and forward gaits, great self-carriage, and an expressive uphill canter. Ribatejo is an absolute joy to ride, and with his exceptional bloodlines, we’re confident he will produce remarkable offspring and make a lasting mark on Lusitano breeding in the North American continent.

A heartfelt congratulations to @azores_stables for believing in our young horse and trusting our team to prepare him for this year’s @apsl_official revision.

🌟 Paladin WL (Impar II SS on Jocosa) – our golden gem – was one of the standout horses during revision day!

He’s no stranger to our social media feed… As one of our most advanced horses in training, Paladin continues to impress with his strong competition results in both Model & Movements and Dressage.

We’ve always believed in his exceptional conformation, athleticism, and outstanding temperament, which made him one of the first horses we approved for breeding. Now, with his first foals already on the ground, we’re thrilled to say: they’re proving to be something special too!

Paladin’s development over the past years, promoted by the riding skills of under the saddle of @zemariafialho and the guidance of @nvicente_matos , as well as the quality of his progeny have been so remarkable that we requested a second revision — and it absolutely paid off. 💯

We’re excited for the future of Paladin’s legacy. This stallion is truly one to watch!

This stunning mare already turned heads last October, winning her class and earning a Silver Medal at the @uslusitano Ocala Model & Movements competition at @worldequestriancenter

She perfectly embodies the qualities we strive for in our Lusitanos:

This week, we continue to highlight the rising stars at Wasatch Lusitanos Stud.

One of our mares to receive high scores during her @apsl_official revision was Sinfonia WL (Instambul SS x Laica MAC). We had no doubts she would do well, just as she did during her presentation at the @uslusitano Model and Movements event held at @worldequestriancenter in October 2024 — a moment we’re proud to remember in today’s post.

It’s been a year since she earned second place and a silver medal in that competition, under the presentation of @daco7961 and @joaocosta208 . Since then, Sinfonia has matured into a beautiful mare and is now in foal to Poison CCM from @lusitanos.carvalhomatos

With 2026 on the horizon, we can already feel the promise it holds!

Meet the newest contributors to the Lusitano breed coming straight from our program! The @apsl_official Lusitano revision is known for its high standards, and we’re proud to say both girls exceeded expectations. They’re officially joining our reproductive program in 2026.

A super elastic and elegant mare, Rainha is the definition of athleticism. With her movement and pedigree, we’re expecting a foal that’s not only a top performer — but also has a 50% chance of stunning color to match, since she is confirmed in foal to the stunning Poison CCM from @lusitanos.carvalhomatos

✨ Saudade WL (Istambul SS x Iris SS)
This bay beauty carries the essence of traditional, functional Lusitano lines. Even her name, Saudade, is a nod to her rich Portuguese roots. We have no doubt her future foals will be “a painting” — just like the Portuguese say when they see a picture-perfect horse.

One of the most pivotal moments for any breeder is grading day. At Wasatch Lusitanos, we know our type and trust in the high standards of our breeding program — but there’s a special kind of pride when that vision is validated by @apsl_official experts who’ve judged thousands of horses over the years.

We’re thrilled to share that all of our horses performed exceptionally well at yesterday’s grading!

💫 Four new mares have been certified for breeding &
💫 Two of our under-saddle horses are now officially approved stallions!

Each of these horses deserves their own spotlight, and we’ll be introducing them individually in upcoming posts — as they are now part of the growing legacy of Wasatch Lusitanos.

We’re absolutely thrilled with this year’s foal crop — and couldn’t be prouder to see our breeding choices paying off!

We have already presented the 4 incredible stallions that we used this season, one of which was last year’s standout wild card in the Lusitano breed competitions in Portugal — Poison CCM from @lusitanos.carvalhomatos

We’ve spoken at length about Poison’s immense potential under saddle and his fast recognition as an @apsl_official recommended stallion, but now we’re seeing that same magic shine through in his offspring! This year, we welcomed 7 foals by Poison, and each one has blown us away with their conformation, amplitude of gaits, typicality, and that Poison-signature curious spark.

And as if that wasn’t enough — we’ve got some serious coat color glam in the mix too!

This week, two of our top mares left the Wasatch L

This week, two of our top mares left the Wasatch Lusitanos pastures and crossed the border to their new home in Canada.

Réplica WL, by Mistral SS out of Hera SS, represented us at the @uslusitano Rising Stars Model and Movements competition held last fall @worldequestriancenter and is a half sister to our standout mare, Salacia WL.

Quinlan WL (by Impar SS out of Jaca), carries the bloodlines of two proven dressage stallions: Altivo SQT and Riopele—one of the most influential sires in the Lusitano breed.

We’ll miss seeing them in the Tennessee sunsets, but we’re confident they’ll make their mark and represent our program well in their next chapter.

Bred from Quo Vadis SS (a 4⭐ APSL-recommended stallion and sire of the Olympic stallion Equador MVL) and out of Jocosa, Samarth carries the kind of genetics that speak for themselves.

Standing nearly 16,1 hands at the withers — and still growing — he’s built for performance, with an effortless push off the ground and an unbreakable cadence that hints at serious dressage talent. We’re incredibly excited to begin his work under saddle and to see just how far his natural ability and heritage will take him. Curious about him?

We can’t keep them all…

This week, we said goodbye to two exceptional mares as they left our Tennessee farm to join an exciting new project in Canada.

Sired by our exceptional stallion Mistral SS and out of Jaca (by Riopele), Rajada WL is a half-sister to Salacia WL, whom we proudly introduced just two weeks ago. With such a powerful genetic cocktail, Rajada WL is poised to make a remarkable impact on her new owner’s breeding program.

Querida WL, sired by Quo-Vadis out of Lisboa MAC, brings outstanding sport genetics as a half-sister to Olympic dressage stallion Equador MVL.
We wish their new owners the very best and look forward to following their next chapter!

🐴 “No hoof, no horse” – an old truth that still stands strong.

Did you know that in Portugal we have a saying: “Sem cascos não há cavalo”, which literally means “Without hooves, there is no horse”? Hoof health is absolutely essential, and at Wasatch Lusitanos, we treat it with the same importance as nutrition, joint care, and training.

Our horses’ feet are checked regularly, and we’ve carefully selected a skilled farrier team to ensure top-notch care. From early on, our young horses are introduced to the farrier process so they’re confident and calm when the time comes.

We’re also proud to have a versatile team on hand, ready to jump in when hoof emergencies arise.

As summer comes to a close, we’re wrapping up the final pregnancy confirmations — and looking ahead to 2026 with 17 foals expected from some of our top mares.

One of this year’s highlights was the colt by Quimera and Larápio MAC. Even at just a few weeks old, he showed impressive presence, a naturally curious attitude, and excellent conformation — long, straight legs, strong angles, and gaits to match a promising sport horse.

We’re looking forward to watching him develop — and just as excited to see what Quimera produces next year.

🎉 Celebrating 5 Years of Nero 🎉

Nero is a very special horse! Bred in Portugal by @lusitanos.carvalhomatos , Nero was already an impressive and talented young horse when he first caught our eye in 2020—elegant, photogenic, and with a natural flair that stood out right away. (Just look at that second photo—how high off the ground is he?! 😍)

He arrived at Wasatch in 2021 during a complicated time, right in the middle of the pandemic. But from the moment @zemariafialho met him, the two became true working companions. Under José Maria’s guidance, Nero began to steadily evolve and we are now seeing the results.

From winning his class in Model and Movements at the @worldequestriancenter @uslusitano Rising Stars competition in Ocala—presented in the traditional Portuguese style by @tomas_da_isabel —to his more recent accomplishments in dressage, Nero continues to grow into the talented athlete we always believed he could be.

His latest highlight? 🏆 1st place in 4th Level Test 3 at the 2025 Tennessean Express Dressage competition! He’s now on the brink of mastering Prix St. Georges, and we couldn’t be prouder of the partnership he’s building with José Maria.

Here’s to the journey so far—and everything still to come. ✨

🌟 Salacia – The Best of Both Worlds 🌟

Did you know that traditionally, there haven’t been many ridden mares in the Lusitano breed? Not because they lack quality as riding partners—but because the Lusitano is a rare breed and there simply weren’t many mares available.

That’s changing! Despite the breed’s rising popularity, with advances in veterinary and reproductive science, it’s now possible for the most outstanding mares to both contribute to the future of the breed and rise to the top of sport.

We have high hopes for our Salacia WL (by Mistral SS, out of Madragoa SS, by Rioepele), affectionately known as Benedita. At just 3 years old, she already shows:
✔️ Impressive conformation
✔️ Balanced, elastic gaits
✔️ Unbreakable rhythm and impulsion
✔️ A serious work ethic

This week, Wasatch Lusitanos, represented by Tomás da Isabel and our talented schoolmaster stallion Guapo JOV, had the honor of presenting the Lusitano breed to the Pettersburg equestrian community at a local horse show!

Tomás & Guapo delivered an impressive demonstration of Working Equitation, a discipline gaining international popularity and perfectly suited to the natural characteristics of the Lusitano breed.
